Inside Studio 88, Kingston’s New Home for Sustainable Art & Local Makers
By Tianna Edwards
If there is one thing we know in (almost) 2026, it’s the importance of shopping sustainably with the intention of supporting local creators, artists and businesses. This level of thoughtfulness is good for our environment and our communities! If you stop by Studio 88 on Wellington street, you can check all of the aforementioned boxes and leave with a beautiful gift for yourself or a loved one.
Founded by artist Meghan Janke, this brand new shop features local artisans of many talents that share similar values. Janke explains, “We all share the same passion of a lighter carbon foot print, embracing nature's beauty & creating an affordable arts community while supporting local!”
Janke is an artist known for her jewellery collection, Great Lakes jewellery, as well as her eco-friendly glass domes featuring preserved butterflies, dragonflies, bees and items from local shorelines. She shares a bit on her artistic evolution, she says, “I always wanted to pursue my talent with creative arts so I began nature paintings in high school and after my time in college for graphic design I began collecting Great Lakes glass and shells and after a deep cleaning I would turn them into earrings & necklaces and gave them the name of Great Lakes jewellery!”
After selling to friends and family, she gained some momentum and participated in markets and pop-ups. Janke adds, “Those were very popular to start out with. I’d come across butterflies, dragonflies & bees past their time a lot so I’d collect them & self taught preservation and started with two monarch butterfly small domes, those went within the first hour. Since then, I’ve been creating more and more, even outsourcing different insects who would pass of natural causes worldwide to carry a wide variety for my collectors!”
Janke is a busy mom of two young kids and has been juggling this passion of jewelry making and preserved art on the side for three years winning awards like the 2025 Canadian choice award for business. This year when she felt ready to expand to a brick and mortar, she was happy to bring along fellow artisans and friends on her journey and feature their work in her shop.
