The Smith Hotel: Where History Meets Modern Luxury

By Tianna Edwards

If you’re looking for a unique and quintessential Kingston accommodation, The Smith Hotel is the spot for you.

Set in the basement of a nineteenth-century church in downtown Kingston, The Smith Hotel started as an AirBnb concept and has evolved into a luxury stay that feels like home, but better. Its proximity to all of the hot spots downtown allows guests to park their car and explore local gems on foot.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Smith recently and was absolutely delighted by the luxurious and thoughtfully curated space.

Those who prefer minimal human interaction might appreciate that The Smith is run by a digital concierge. You receive the codes, details and instructions to access your key and your room via text message ahead of your stay. You might not see a staff member upon arrival but their presence is felt in the details of space and experience.

Unwind in Style

After grabbing my key from the drop box in the lobby and making my way down the matte black hallways with eye-catching gold light, I open the door and I’m met with the most calming aroma (a diffuser had been running!) wafting through the air of a beautifully bright and spacious suite. The 20-foot high ceilings showcase the limestone that Kingston is so famous for. The cozy living room kitchen and bathroom are downstairs and the king-size bed can be found at the top of the wooden stairs. The natural elements and mid-century design make the space feel effortlessly chic.

10/10 Location

Since the Smith Hotel is located centrally in downtown Kingston, it’s a stone’s throw away from anywhere guests might want to explore. And you can do it on foot! Walk a maximum of 20 minutes and you’ll find yourself in the hub, close to many thoughtfully curated shops and restaurants.

Thoughtfully Curated

The staff at The Smith have also curated a guide book that allows guests to step away from the algorithm of a Google search and immerse themselves in the authentic Kingston experience. They’ve identified locally-owned restaurants, trails and experiences and share the price points and time it takes to travel to each location – so handy! The mini-bar items that are laid out meticulously on the counter and lined up in the fridge are a thoughtful selection of the best snacks and libations from small businesses in the local community and as far as Prince Edward County.

Your Home Away From Home

For guests who travel often for business, the suites at The Smith Hotel give guests access to a full kitchen so they can keep their routine by cooking breakfast, and preparing snacks and dinner. Each suite also has a record player and a living room with plenty of space to sit. If you’re not interested in cooking, The Grocery Basket is their sister company, and guests can order a breakfast program the evening before for a timed delivery the next morning. I make myself an incredible cup of coffee made with the top of the line Moccamaster while I wait for breakfast to arrive. When my croissants and fruit are delivered, I marvel at how fresh the croissants are.

Overall, I felt the coziness of home with a taste of luxury due to the meticulous mid-century design elements and the mini-bar and top-notch products. The bed sheets were also incredibly soft and the bath products outdid the soaps and lotions of any place I’ve ever stayed. After just one night, I can tell a lot of thought and care has been poured into The Smith.
