Built to Last: James Reid Furniture Celebrates Over 170 Years in Business
By Sierra Saikaley
Since 1854, James Reid Furniture has woven its story into the fabric of Kingston, Ontario. Now, over 170 years later, this family-run business and cherished fixture in the community is celebrating an incredible milestone. While it has evolved alongside our city, its commitment to fine craftsmanship and genuine neighbourly service has never changed.
I recently got the chance to learn more about this historic business with David Reid, the current owner and great-grandson of the original founder, James Reid.
Surrounded by beautiful furniture and pieces of Kingston history, David shared exciting stories about the store's journey from its early days offering both furniture and undertaking services to its evolution into Canada’s oldest operating furniture store, predating Canada itself. He fondly pointed out fascinating items like the store’s original safe from 1854, old news clippings, and historic photos that tell the story of his family's long legacy.
Their downtown location at 252 Princess Street, the original birthplace of James Reid Furniture, has an exciting museum-like quality. With multiple levels and rooms full of stylish furniture and pieces of the past, the building offers a unique opportunity to explore Kingston’s history while shopping. The second floor, once a dance hall and bowling alley, displays vintage photographs and the original bowling pins. The old carriage house, once used for deliveries, is now a showroom filled with elegant furniture and décor. You can even check out the James Reid Furniture ad that appeared on the cover of the paper when it was announced that the Titanic sank.
And that only scratches the surface of the history you can explore here.
At the heart of James Reid Furniture is a strong commitment to quality and offering the best furniture available. David and his team see each piece as something that should stand the test of time, becoming a cherished part of a home for generations. “Furniture should be like art,” David explained, “Quality is always in style, and quality lasts.”
With over a century of refinement and a tradition of design, every item and brand they offer is carefully curated to reflect true value and the highest standard of quality. Nothing goes on the showroom floor unless they believe in its value.
Stepping into the store is a very refreshing experience. Unlike shopping online, where you can only imagine how a piece feels, here you can see, touch, and try the furniture for yourself. Their passionate team is always on hand to offer expert advice and help customers find the piece that suits them best. Customers can browse in-stock pieces, explore different fabrics and colours, or work with the staff to customise something just right for their space. There are more options than just what you see in the store.
If you’ve ever felt intimidated walking into a big furniture store, don’t worry. The team at James Reid Furniture wants you to know that you’re welcome to browse, ask questions, and take in the history without any pressure.
