Confidence in Motion: How Pole Fitness Builds Strength Inside and Out
By Sierra Saikaley
Have you ever wanted to feel like you’re flying? See yourself doing things you never thought you could? Feel more empowered and confident in a community that makes you feel safe and supported?
That’s exactly what the team at Pole Fitness strives to give every student.
I attended the first two series of Pole Fitness, and while I started with some hesitation, I finished that summer feeling stronger and more capable than I could have imagined. Once I got comfortable with my kind and supportive instructor and got over the learning curve, I was doing things I never thought I could in just a few weeks.
Whether you end up performing spins in the air or just building enough strength to reach the top of the pole, the progress is real and incredibly empowering.
Because I had such a great experience, I was excited to meet with the owner, Kendal, to learn more about how the studio got its start and what makes it so special.
Kendal first discovered pole in Ottawa. “I had bad knees and wanted to try something different—pole was an outlet to dance and an alternative activity to working out while having fun,” she said. “I tried pole and immediately loved the new physical challenge.”
After four years of training and a move to Kingston, she decided to create a space of her own. “Kingston didn't have a pole studio, so I needed a space locally to keep up my practice.” In 2015, she opened Pole Fitness Kingston, and within the first month, more than 1,200 people dropped in to check it out.
Starting came with its fair share of obstacles. “I had to build a team, and this meant finding people in Kingston who had done pole before. I had to teach, train, and focus on getting the business going in all aspects.” With few standards or resources for boutique fitness in Canada at the time, Kendal sought out certification for herself and her instructors to ensure a high standard for safe, empowering instruction.
From day one, the mission has been to make everyone feel welcome and uplifted. “We have worked hard over the last ten years to create a warm, welcoming, inclusive, and empowering environment for anyone who walks through our door,” Kendal said. “We’ve done this by creating a judgment-free space where everyone's successes are celebrated, no matter how big or small they may seem.”
Pole Fitness Kingston offers a wide range of classes and styles for every interest and experience level. “We have classes that focus on different styles—from Sport, Flow, Heels, Exotic, Artistic—and classes that complement one’s growth and development on the pole, such as Flexibility, Conditioning, heels, choreography, handstands, acro, many of which are for all levels. There is truly something for everyone.”
Outside of classes you can also experience a luxurious sauna & halosalt therapy for unwinding and recorvery. Or bring your best group of friends for a pole party, which is a great introduction to the sport and fun, creative way to celebrate a special occasion!
The space itself adds to the experience. Located in a beautiful historic downtown building, it has an energy that encourages confidence and connection. “Everyone who comes in feels they can accomplish what they came in for.”
Kendal has also built a team that reflects the studio’s inclusive values. “Our team consists of women who come from all different levels of fitness experience and body types, which demonstrates that anyone can succeed. It’s great to have an instructor who can relate and provide the right type of feedback to help people improve and progress.”
Looking ahead, Kendal is excited about the potential for growth. “Pole Fitness really aligns with other sports — yoga, Pilates, dance, burlesque, and aerial sports like lyra and hoop. If there is growing popularity in any of these activities, I would love to foster greater collaboration and build a space that can accommodate them.”
What stands out most about Pole Fitness is the strength of its community. Kendal explained, “Most pole studios are full of supportive, encouraging people who cheer each other on. You'll find a sense of connection and empowerment that goes beyond just working out.”
And for Kendal, that community is also what keeps her going. “What keeps me motivated as both a business owner and an athlete is the constant growth—not just in myself, but in the people around me. The most rewarding part of owning a pole fitness studio is witnessing the transformation in others—watching someone walk in unsure of themselves and then grow stronger, more confident, and proud of what their body can do. That energy is contagious, and it's what fuels me every day.”
That energy is exactly what I felt in my own experience at Pole Fitness. It’s more than a workout. It’s a community that lifts you up, literally and figuratively.

What are the benefits of Pole Fitness?
Full-Body Strength & Conditioning
Pole fitness requires and develops functional strength, especially in the upper body, core, and grip. It's a fun way to get strong without feeling like you're doing traditional gym workouts.
Confidence & Body Positivity
Many people experience a big confidence boost as they learn to move their bodies in new, expressive ways. The atmosphere is often inclusive and empowering, helping individuals embrace and celebrate their bodies.
Creativity & Expression
Pole allows for artistic expression through movement, combining dance, acrobatics, and personal style. It's not just a workout- it's a way to connect to your own creativity and freedom.
Flexibility & Mobility
Many pole moves require (and build) flexibility and control, which improves overtime. Classes often incorporate stretching and mobility work, helping with overall body awareness.
Fun & Playful Learning
Pole challenges you to learn tricks, spins, and combos - it's like adult recess with goals. The sense of accomplishment after nailing a move you've worked on is incredibly rewarding.
Community & Support
Most studios foster a tight-knit, supportive community. Students cheer each other on, creating a space where encouragement and friendships thrive.
Alternative to Traditional Fitness
Many people are bored of the gym and want something exciting and engaging. Pole offers a unique alternative that still delivers serious fitness results.
Personal Empowerment
Learning to hold yourself upside down, climb, or flow sensually can be incredibly empowering. It helps people reconnect with their inner strength - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Any advice for first-timers?
Pole fitness is such a powerful and empowering way to move your body, and starting out with the right mindset can make all the difference.
Here's some honest, supportive advice for anyone considering it for the first time:
1. You Don't Need to Be Strong or Flexible to Start
A lot of people assume they need to be fit before trying pole, but that's not true. Pole fitness builds strength, flexibility, and confidence over time. Just show up as you are-the progress will come.
2. It's Normal to Feel Nervous (or Awkward!)
Everyone starts at the beginning. Feeling awkward is part of learning something new, especially when it involves coordination, body awareness, and sometimes being upside down. Laugh through it, you're not alone.
3. Skin Contact is Key
Pole grips best to bare skin, which means shorts and sleeveless tops are often worn. It can feel vulnerable at first, but it's totally normal in the pole world. Most studios are inclusive, body-positive spaces where everyone is focused on their own journey.
4. Expect Some Bruises (Pole Kisses!)
Your body will adapt, but early on you might notice bruises or minor soreness from gripping and spinning. That's a sign of progress, not failure.
5. Progress Looks Different for Everyone
Some moves will come quickly, others will take time. Celebrate the small wins-your first spin, climbing higher, feeling more confident. It all counts.
6. You're Stronger Than You Think
Pole fitness reveals a type of strength-mental and physical-that most people don't know they have. Stick with it, and you'll surprise yourself.
7. Community is a Big Part of It
Most pole studios are full of supportive, encouraging people who cheer each other on. You'll find a sense of connection and empowerment that goes beyond just working out.
