Checking In: A Stay at the Kingston Marriott Downtown
By Rosalyn Gambhir
Welcome to the Kingston Marriott - you’re in for a warm welcome with its thoughtfully modern design.
Perfectly situated in the heart of downtown Kingston at the intersection of King St and Clarence St, the Kingston Marriott is steps away from charming shops, restaurants, the scenic waterfront and Springer Market Square.
After a full rebrand and floor-to-ceiling renovations from its previous identity as the Four Points by Sheraton, this hotel is now one of the city’s newest hospitality gems, offering all the benefits of the globally trusted Marriott brand right in the heart of Kingston.
First Impressions
The moment I walked into the refreshed lobby, I knew this wasn’t just a facelift - it was a full transformation. Light, bright, and undeniably fresh, the space feels like it belongs in a design magazine. Whether you’re checking in for a weekend escape, hosting guests, or just stopping by for a cocktail at the bar, the energy is elevated and welcoming.
The Stay
For this visit, I stayed in the Club Executive King Room, and it checked every box for a perfect cozy stay. We’re talking a super comfy King bed with plush pillows, great downtown views, a TV with a multitude of channels, a mini kitchenette (yes, there's a fridge and coffee/tea station too), and a sitting area perfect for lounging. The bathroom lighting was on point (hello, flawless selfies and make-up application), and the bathrobes - they always make any stay that much more luxurious.
As I settled in for the night, I was pleasantly surprised by a little lavender sleep spray waiting on the nightstand - a thoughtful touch. It’s small details like this that show how the Marriott brand curates each guest’s stay with care, making every visit memorable.
Dine at The Academy
Now, let’s talk about the real reason my foodie heart was excited - dinner at The Academy. Located just off the main lobby, this new dining destination is named as a playful nod to Kingston’s many educational institutions. But trust me, this isn’t your typical hotel restaurant. The Academy is raising the bar and redefining what it means to dine in-house, right in the heart of a city known for its vibrant culinary scene.
With Executive Chef Ahmed Boukraa leading the kitchen, The Academy’s menu features global flavours and western-inspired favourites. It’s creative, elevated, yet still approachable. The kind of place that holds its own among Kingston’s foodie gems, while bringing its own refined flair to the table.
My foodie partner-in-crime and I had the pleasure of having dinner and it truly exceeded our expectations. While I indulged in the pan seared Tuscan salmon (with lemon quinoa and cherry tomatoes - perfection and the presentation was impeccable!), my partner enjoyed the rich, comforting butter chicken that had us planning our next visit.
The Academy is a new Kingston must for guests staying at the Kingston Marriott or local residents, looking for a new dining experience or cozying up at the bar with one of their signature cocktails.
Recommendation: After dinner, take a sunset stroll along Kingston’s waterfront to take in the sunset. Wander down to Confederation Park and up to Richardson Beach for a golden hour walk by the water. This experience pairs perfectly with a scoop of gelato or sorbet from local favourite, Mio Gelato. Trust me, it’s the perfect way to end the evening!
M Club Lounge: A Hidden Gem
New to me was the M Club Lounge - an exclusive complimentary space for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members, but also available for an extra fee (worth it!). Located on the second floor of the Kingston Marriott, this sleek space offers a quiet retreat with 24-hour access to a grab-and-go snack station, non-alcoholic drinks, breakfast, as well as evening hors d’oeuvres. It’s great whether you’re working remotely or just want to elevate your stay with an extra layer of service, and can be used as a private business centre.
Furry Friends Welcome
Did you know the Kingston Marriott also welcomes your four-legged companion? Because what’s a getaway without your best friend? Whether you're exploring Kingston or relaxing in your room, they make sure both you and your pet are treated with care.
Final Thoughts
This stay reminded me that you don’t have to go far to feel refreshed, inspired, and a little bit spoiled. The Kingston Marriott has truly transformed into a modern, welcoming destination right in the heart of downtown. It truly meets your needs of comfort, convenience, style, and a little indulgence.
So, whether you’re planning a romantic escape, hosting out-of-town guests who deserve the royal treatment, attending a conference, need a change of scenery as a local, or simply want to switch up your work from home view (hello, robes and room service!), I highly recommend checking in - the Kingston Marriott is the place to be.
