Artists of Downtown: Leah Georgina
By Tianna Edwards
I’ve admired Leah Georgina’s pottery for years - it’s chic, functional and makes for a lovely gift! She pops up at many local markets, and you can find many of her pieces being used by local restaurants like Northside. Recently, Art Noise began selling her pieces, which is so exciting for local fans.
Scroll down to learn how Georgina got her start in pottery and why she’s excited to have her pieces available at Art Noise.
Tianna Edwards: Tell me a bit about yourself.
Leah Georgina: I’m a small-batch production potter with a love for simple, contemporary wheel-thrown pottery. Inspired by modern, functional design, I create pieces meant to be used and enjoyed in everyday life. I work from my home studio in Bath, Ontario—just outside of Kingston—where I live with my husband, our two children, and our dog.
I’m a Latin Canadian of Dominican descent, raised in Guelph, Ontario. I grew up playing competitive soccer, including at the University of Guelph, and later earned a PhD in Nutritional Sciences. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel and live across Canada before eventually settling in the Kingston area. Outside the studio, I find joy in sports, cooking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends—ideally over a good glass of wine!
TE: What made you fall in love with pottery?
LG: I’ve always been drawn to creativity and tactile arts. Growing up on a hobby farm in Guelph, my dad had an old kick-wheel tucked away in the barn loft. Pottery fascinated me, but I was too young at the time to try it. So instead, I kept my hands busy sewing, crocheting, beading—anything crafty.
It wasn’t until 2018 that a friend invited me to take a pottery class at Amaranth Stoneware in Kingston. It was love at first throw! Pottery felt calming and meditative, yet invigorating. It gave me a sense of balance and mindfulness that I didn’t know I needed. I’ve always been full of energy and on the go—pottery helped me slow down.
When the pandemic hit, I stayed home with my young kids and leaned further into ceramics. I became a member of the Kingston Potters’ Guild, bought a wheel, and gradually turned this passion into a full-time career. The support and encouragement from my community and followers keep me inspired every day.
TE: What excites you most about having your items available at Art Noise?
LG: I’m most passionate about creating functional pottery—pieces that are part of daily rituals at home. Art Noise brings together a vibrant community that values both art and design, making it a natural fit for my work.
My aesthetic leans toward clean, minimal design with organic textures and forms. I often leave surfaces raw or use soft finishes like clear or matte white glaze. That modern, understated look complements the vision of Art Noise beautifully.
Located in Kingston’s historic downtown, Art Noise is a hub for creativity and thoughtful living. I’m thrilled to collaborate with their team and have my work accessible to those looking to gift or grow their collection.
TE: Which piece would you say is the most popular? (I personally love the butter dish!)
LG: Thank you—I love the butter dish too! But I’d say my mugs are the real crowd favourite. People are drawn to their simple lines, large handles, and the comforting feel in the hand. A good mug should feel like a warm hug.
My kitchenware line overall is very popular—especially the oil bottles, utensil holders, salt pinches, and of course, the butter dish. I also love working with people to create custom dinnerware sets that reflect their personal style and suit their everyday life.
TE: Anything you’d like to add?
LG: People often ask me about my logo—it’s a flying pig! It symbolizes the idea of doing the impossible. After dedicating years to a PhD in Nutrition and working in health and wellness research, the thought of switching careers to become a full-time potter felt like a far-fetched dream.
With no formal education or training in ceramics, I feel incredibly grateful and inspired to be doing what I love every single day. Pottery is my passion, and I’m so happy to share it with others.
