The Secret Garden Inn: 130 Years in the Making

By Mariana Flores

Hidden deep in the historic Sydenham Ward lies one of Kingston's most beloved bed-and-breakfast destinations for both locals and tourists worldwide.

The Secret Garden Inn and their intricately crafted breakfast, afternoon tea, and 5-course fondue dinner experiences stand as a testament to both history and hospitality.

So, whether you're drawn to its meticulously restored Victorian-era charm, or the modern luxury seamlessly integrated into its historic setting, The Secret Garden Inn promises a stay as memorable as it is enchanting.

Crafting Hospitality with Care:

I was lucky enough to meet with Jason O'Brien, the inn's current owner, who showed me around and answered all my burning questions. During our talk, I learnt about the vision Jason has had throughout the inn's creation and running. This included details from the importance of Kingston's centrality to big neighbouring cities, to how he has utilized his experiences growing up in Kingston and travelling abroad to cater the best hospitality experience for both local and international guests.

It's clear that The Secret Garden has been restored with care and intention. Walking into the place is an experience in itself. As you pass the koi fishpond and delicately beautiful garden beds, you are greeted by the building's stunning architecture and gold-leaf-accented entryway, welcoming you into one of Kingston's most unique bed-and-breakfasts.

The Perfect Mix of International and Local Cuisine:

Although The Secret Garden Inn is Kingston-owned and operated, a large part of its focus is geared towards embracing a blend of international and local flavours, creating a unique culinary experience that reflects Kingston's rich culture. This doesn't only mean you get to enjoy craft wine imported from France and Italy during your stay, but you also get to enjoy your classic English-style fondue dinner with items such as prosecco sorbet, pacific salmon, and a variety of Swiss cheeses.

At the same time, they love to support Kingston's local businesses, as the idea of "farm to table" is one of their biggest motivations. Throughout your stay, you may see some recognizable Kingston brands, such as 1000 Islands Soap Co., CHA-CHA tea, and Olive and Co.

130 Years in the Making:

During our talk, Jason and I dove into details about the building's history. Built by John McKay in 1888, the building served as a home for a handful of families throughout the 19th and 20th centuries before being turned into a bed and breakfast by the Taylor Family. New business owners took over in 1996, 2011, and again in 2020, when Jason and his family remodeled the home once again.

When you stay at The Secret Garden Inn, you're not just enjoying a comfortable room; you're immersing yourself in a 130-year-old history that has shaped the inn into what it is today. For example, the deep history of the property is showcased in each room's name and decor. All guest rooms are named after a notable or famous Kingstonian person, event, or location, such as the McKay room, named after the original creator of the home, and the Cloverdale room, named after the architect who oversaw the design of The Spire and Kingston's City Hall. The large amount of studying Jason conducted to create each name became abundantly clear when he spoke to me about each of their significance.

Despite this constant change and transformation throughout the years, every owner has managed to maintain the original architecture and integrity of the building. The essence and history of the place are now a crucial aspect of each guest's experience at The Secret Garden Inn.

The Pandemic: Additional Time to Refine

During their renovation, which occurred during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jason was especially keen on preserving the building's architecture and history. The goal became to declutter and bring the building back to its original charm and heritage. Although some would view the pandemic as a massive burden, it became a blessing in disguise for the O'Brien family. It allowed for a much more thorough renovation, which included everything from enhancing the exterior and garden to shipping period furniture pieces from Victoria, B.C. and restoring some of the building's original Terracotta wood.

This stunning bed-and-breakfast strikes an intricate balance between modern comfort and a Victorian Heritage style. You can indulge in the luxuries of Casper mattresses and linen sheets imported from Portugal, all while appreciating the newly restored stained-glass windows, 4-poster bed frames, and antique chandeliers.

Indulge in Luxury, Create Lasting Memories:

The Secret Garden provides an immersive and customized experience for every one of its guests. What's more, the history and authenticity of the place only elevates one's visit to this beautiful bed-and-breakfast.

Even if you are not staying in one of their rooms for the night, take advantage of enjoying a luxurious dining experience at one of their breakfasts, afternoon teas, or 5-course fondue dinners. Perfect for any anniversary, family reunion, baby shower, wedding, and so much more, The Secret Garden Inn is sure to help you create lasting memories for you and your loved ones right in the heart of Downtown Kingston.

Hello! My name is Mariana, and I am one of the Student Brand Ambassadors for Downtown Kingston this summer. I am currently a student entering my second year of communications at the University of Ottawa. I grew up frequently travelling and moving around the world with my parents until we unexpectedly moved to Kingston a little over three years ago. I quickly became a big fan of Kingston's unique atmosphere, and throughout these past couple of years, Kingston has become a fond place in my heart and a place that I can proudly call my "hometown." We are lucky that Downtown Kingston is filled with some truly exceptional hidden gems. I hope to keep discovering and spreading the word about these quaint little places, not only to give them all the recognition they deserve but also to allow both locals and tourists to discover some of the places that compelled me to love Kingston and its community so much.
