Room with a View: Discover Kingston’s Waterfront Holiday Inn

By Mariana Flores

Standing beside some of Kingston’s most famous historic landmarks, such as the Martello Towers, Fort Henry National Historic Site, and the Bellevue House, The Waterfront Holiday Inn is, informally, one of the most recently established landmarks in the downtown area. For the last 50 years, the Waterfront Holiday Inn has been the only building located at the very bottom of Princess Street, connecting the St. Lawrence Harbor to the rest of the city of Kingston. Because of this, the hotel has become an iconic location for both Kingston locals and tourists.

Despite its long history on the Kingston waterfront, the hotel was recently completely renovated only four years ago in 2020, and after spending a night at the Holiday Inn myself, I was able to experience everything that makes this location unique from all the others. Kingston’s waterfront Holiday Inn is the perfect place for every occasion; from celebrating special events with friends and family, indulging in the luxury of their newly renovated rooms on a weekend staycation, to heading down to their in-house restaurant by the water to enjoy a meal and catch up with friends.

The Ultimate Waterfront Retreat:

Aside from this hotel’s beautiful waterfront view, one of its most notable features is its incredible location and setting. As it is located right in the heart of downtown Kingston, it gives guests an opportunity to immerse themselves and explore everything this vibrant city has to offer. Don’t worry about whipping out a map or asking others for help while trying to find your way to different attractions. From the Holiday Inn, you can easily spill out onto the streets of Kingston and find your way to some of downtown Kingston’s most popular attractions. 2 Princess Street is only steps away from Kingston’s City Hall, Springer Market Square, Confederation Park, Crawford Warf, which is where most boat tours setting out to explore the St. Lawrence River and the “Thousand Islands” depart from, and much more.

Not only can you enjoy the scenery of the Kingston Harbour while you’re out and about exploring during the day, but with the waterfront easily visible from many of the Holiday Inn’s rooms, you can continue to indulge in the picturesque views right from your floor-to-ceiling hotel window and private balcony.

Year-Round Culinary Experiences:

Kingston’s culinary scene and many of its local restaurants are renowned for their diverse cuisine and incredibly charming summer patio season, and this reputation is undoubtedly extended to The Holiday Inn’s on-site restaurant, Wharf and Feather. Their creative menu items, incredibly friendly staff, and stunning waterfront view create a transformative environment that truly makes you feel like you are at a getaway destination. What’s more, Wharf and Feather ensures that there are unique culinary experiences and events you can enjoy year-round.

During the warmer months, their pet-friendly patio is constantly bustling with special events, exclusive menus, and live music from local Kingston artists. The quality of their locally sourced ingredients is definitely showcased in certain dishes, such as this summer’s Oven-Baked Brie and even in cult-classic menu items, such as the Pier Fish and Chips.

When the leaves start falling, and the weather gets colder, you can still enjoy their elevated pub gastronomy in the winter with their innovative outdoor dining domes located right on their patio. These clear domes allow you to still enjoy the view of Kingston’s harbor and Wharf and Feather’s exceptional atmosphere, all while staying away from the cold.

Finally, Wharf and Feather are avid participants in Kingstonlicous, a popular annual culinary event throughout February and March. These events allow you to participate in exclusive dining experiences created by Wharf and Feather’s executive chef, Pankaj Bhatt, and other special celebrity chefs.

Amenities and Comforts:

After being completely renovated in 2020, The Holiday Inn now offers a variety of newly modernized amenities and comforts. Aside from the amiable staff, who are always readily available to assist you with check-in or any questions, the Holiday Inn also has a grand indoor heated pool, perfect for those colder or rainy summer days, and a spacious fitness area, which is always free and available for all guests to use.

That’s not all the Holiday Inn provides in terms of amenities. We can all understand how small details such as plenty of outlets, an ample bathroom countertop, coat hooks, fast internet, or a designated space to place luggage or suitcases to avoid clutter can sometimes make all the difference. These small luxuries ensure your romantic getaway, exciting vacation or special celebration is perfectly catered to your needs and allow you to focus on creating lasting memories with your loved ones instead of on the typical difficulties of travelling and hotel stays.

A Haven of Comfort:

The Holiday Inn on the Kingston waterfront has expertly designed the perfect blend of hospitality and comfort for its guests. This makes it the ideal spot for both Kingstonians seeking a unique staycation destination and tourists eager to immerse themselves in the heart of downtown Kingston. With everything from its welcoming atmosphere, beautiful waterfront views, recently renovated design, and delicious dining at Wharf and Feather, this hotel ensures a memorable stay where every detail is designed to enhance your stay.

Mariana Flores

Hello! My name is Mariana, and I am one of the Student Brand Ambassadors for Downtown Kingston this summer. I am currently a student entering my second year of communications at the University of Ottawa. I grew up frequently travelling and moving around the world with my parents until we unexpectedly moved to Kingston a little over three years ago. I quickly became a big fan of Kingston's unique atmosphere, and throughout these past couple of years, Kingston has become a fond place in my heart and a place that I can proudly call my "hometown."

We are lucky that Downtown Kingston is filled with some truly exceptional hidden gems. I hope to keep discovering and spreading the word about these quaint little places, not only to give them all the recognition they deserve but also to allow both locals and tourists to discover some of the places that compelled me to love Kingston and its community so much.
